What does SGRS do?

The SGRS aims to;

  • Strengthen, support and provide focus for the University's postgraduate research community
  • Enhance the social, cultural and welfare support offered by the University
  • Enhance our research culture by encouraging academic contact between students & researchers
  • Coordinate generic research training and the development of your skills
  • Provide information and advice on funding sources and good practice

As a member of SGRS, you will have access to facilities that are not available to other students (even other postgraduate students on taught programmes). These include:

  • The opportunity to work with some of the leading researchers in the world across a range of academic disciplines
  • Access to most computing & library facilities at the same level as staff & email access to Inter-Library loans
  • Specialised training & seminars and an established communications network
  • Space in which to work, in an office shared with other research students in your department, and use of office facilities (including telephone and photocopying)

Joining the family

Induction Days are held in October and March for new research students. You will be introduced to SGRS and its resources, pick up your SGRS Student Handbook and meet other students beginning their research degree.

SGRS will give you a detailed introduction to the training programme you will undertake whilst at Stirling, and also runs regular Seminars to help develop your generic and transferable skills (which includes our award-nominated "Learning Process" course, which is aimed specifically at first year postgraduates.

Your time at Stirling will include regular access to training events run by SGRS (in generic research skills) and by your department (on more subject-specific topics).
