Commercialisation

Two business men are walking together in a busy street, having a conversation. They are the only two figures in sharp focus.

From research output to the marketplace

Commercialisation activities are an important part of the University’s enterprise activity, offering a valuable interface between our research expertise and its potential users.  The Research & Enterprise Office provides a high level of support to Schools undertaking commercialisation activities, including strategic development alliances, license agreements and setting up spin-out companies.

Our focus is to help you maximise the benefits to you, and your research, from commercialisation activities – utilising our networks, market analysis and working within the University’s knowledge exchange policies.

What can we do for you?

The Research Development Manager aligned to your School can support you, helping you to identify and exploit opportunities to commercialise your research outcomes. They can advise you on a range of issues including;

  • Identifying your intellectual asset (or intellectual property) components,
  • Facilitating contract negotiations with development partners, licensees or purchasers of your technology/product (drawing on the expertise of our Contracts Manager),
  • Identifying the most suitable approach to commercialisation and developing strategies,
  • Identifying sources of funding to further develop any product components,
  • Assessing potential markets and develop marketing strategies, market planned courses and your ability to deliver bespoke courses.

The Team will help with contract negotiations, (through the Contracts Manager), authorisation from the university for official acceptance of contracts and, once your commercial activity is off the ground, brief colleagues in the Finance Office to facilitate project set-up.

Further detail is available in the University’s Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Policy Document.
